narcolepsy: A disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, sudden "sleep attacks," and hallucinations. People suffering from narcolepsy can fall asleep at any time, including at work or behind the wheel of a car. When a person with narcolepsy suddenly falls asleep, they go directly from a waking state into REM sleep. People can easily be awakened, but often quickly fall asleep again.

night terrors: Begins with a sudden awakening, accompanied by a terrified scream. The person then attempts to escape a perceived threat. Because the "fight or flight" response is activated, a person in the grip of a night terror may cause injury to themselves or others. Once the episode is over, the person goes back to sleep and has no memory of the incident.
