Can loss of sleep cause alzheimer like symptoms?

My father who is 55yrs old has been in the hospital for 2 weeks following a tramatic injury. He seems very confused at times and unsure of where he is and even who we are at times. He also seems very tired. He is getting alot of pain meds and the nurses and doctors are in and out of his room every 15 mins or so. also with family visiting I know he is suffering from lack of sleep. The doctors originally thought his confusion was due to the drugs he has been getting but now are saying they think it is traumatic onset alzheimer's disease. I was wondering if it could be the drugs and the lack of sleep instead.
