does chronic sleep deprivation (such as due to noise, not merely insomnia) cause brain damage?

During a normal day, exposure to free radicals and changes in the body's metabolism can cause slight damage to an individual's brain. When the body sleeps, repair happens. Damage done to the brain during the day is mended and the brain is restored to its potential and refreshed. Thus, when an individual goes without sleep for long periods of time, more damage to the brain accrues. Usually this can be remedied by long hours of "catch-up" sleep. But in extreme cases, the damage can be irreparable.
