Okay, hold onto your socks! This question requires a rather long-winded answer... Here are three key tips for improving the quality of your sleep:
1) Don't use an alarm clock. Let your body wake up by natural means, when it's ready. Interrupted sleep, in extreme cases, can actually damage the brain and reduce its ability to make order in memories.
2) Go to bed when you feel tired. Don't ignore your body's fatigue. Going to bed when you feel tired will also help in being able to wake up without the use of an alarm. This also means that you shouldn't go to bed before you feel sleepy, which often results in the "tossing and turning" experience of insomnia.
3) Avoid substances that interfere with your sleep cycles. We all know that caffeine can interfere with your body's natural rhythms, and that many people use it to fight sleepiness. Most people don't realize, however, that an alcoholic drink before bed, or even a sleeping aid such as melatonin can interfere with our body's natural sleep cycles. Among the many substances that affect sleep, there aren't any that we've found yet that regulate the body's circadian rhythm without side effects.
